Google’s Stadia launch is making waves with its underwhelming performance in the wild

  • Apparently despite Google’s insistence that games will run in 4K resolutions at 60 fps, Bungie has stated that the Stadia’s version of Destiny 2 renders at 1080P and then upscales to improve the quality
    • This appears to be a common strategy, with Red Dead Redemption 2 also rendering at 1440p and upscaling after the fact
  • Google’s released a statement basically saying that they support 4K and 60fps, and they give developers “the freedom of how to achieve the best image quality and frame rate”
    • They went on to say that they expect developers will be continually improving gameplay and graphics as time goes on
  • Still, after Google’s vice president announced that all games at launch would support 4K, this is a bitter pill to swallow for many who spent almost $200 on the platform and signed up for the $10/month service in addition to the cost of the games themselves
  • In an effort to ease the pain of new users Google’s given a couple of free games to early adopters- Farming Simulator 19: Platinum Edition and Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, and refunds for both for people who recently purchased them at full price

Valve revealed more details about Half-Life: Alyx, and it looks gorgeous

  • The graphics are just beautiful, and gameplay seems to be the familiar mix of shooting and problem solving that Half-Life fans are used to
    • They’ve also brought gravity gun-like mechanics with the gravity gloves, which seem to allow for full-scale gameplay in smaller rooms by letting you catch and bring stuff towards you that you can’t otherwise reach
  • The game can apparently be played either sitting, standing, or with roomscale movement, and players can use finger-tracking or trigger-based controllers to either teleport around or walk smoothly with an analog stick
  • It’ll officially support the Valve Index, HTC Vive, Windows Mixed Reality, and Oculus Rift headsets. The Oculus Quest will also work when connected to a PC
  • That PC is going to need some beefy specs though, with Alyx’s minimum requirements including mid-high range processors and graphics cards, as well as 12GB of RAM
  • It will apparently be a “full-length” game, hitting Steam in March 2020, and preorders are available for $60USD. Owners of the Index will get it for free

Facebook has acquired Beat Games, the developers of Beat Saber, and I’m not sure how to feel about it

  • On one hand, Beat Saber is an amazing game and the team behind it deserves all the money and recognition
  • On the other, Facebook is my least favourite company and I can’t help but think there’s going to be a combination of nickel-and-diming and privacy invasion coming soon
    • They’ve already announced Facebook support incoming with “social features, new modes, music, and more”
  • Apparently the dev team will join Oculus Studios to continue work on all currently supported platforms, and current plans for 360 degree levels and more music remain unchanged

And last we have a blast from the past for you- contaminated romaine lettuce has hit once more, causing 67 cases of E. coli across the US

  • You might remember this from way back in episode 191, 193, and 226
  • This time the outbreak has been linked to romaine grown in Salinas, California, and the CDC is advising consumers and retailers not to eat, sell, or serve any romaine grown in the region
  • If you’re not sure where your romaine came from it’s best to just toss it to be safe

Deathwing crashes Heroes of the Storm

Deathwing breaks many conventions of what people are used to with a hero in Heroes of the Storm.
He is the largest playable character in the game, making him a massive target. Even larger than when Alexstraza, uses her dragon form, but Deathwing will always be in his dragon form.
He is a melee bruiser, with energy instead of mana. He has huge advantages, and its balanced by extreme weaknesses.

His strengths

  • Deathwing is permanently Unstoppable. He is immune to all crowd control effects
  • He does area damage
  • All his abilities are not only strong, but cannot be interrupted
  • He has a high health pool, and a ton of armour
  • He has global mobility
  • And Crowd Control abilites

His weaknesses

  • He is unaffected by allied abilities, that’s no buffs or heals
  • Poke damage can’t be healed easily, so its quite dangerous
  • With a massive health pool, percentage-damage attacks do quite a lot
  • His abilities have a obvious wind-up, all his attacks are telegraphed
  • Once he uses Dragonflight, his options are limited

His abilities

Passive

  • Aspect of Death

    • Deathwing has 4 armour plates which grant 10 armor each. Each quarter portion of his health lost, loses a plate. And health gained does not restore armor plates. Only Dragonflight will heal are restore armor plates.
    • Deathwing is unstoppable and deals 100% additional damage to heroes.
    • And his contempt for even his allies prevent them from using friendly effects on him.

Mount

  • Dragonflight

    • 45 Second cooldown
    • After 3 seconds, fly into the sky, becoming immune to all effects and gaining 2.5% Health per second.
    • Taking or dealing damage puts this ability on a 5 second cooldown.

1 Key

  • Form Switch

    • Switches Deathwing between Destroyer and World Breaker forms, each granting access to two unique Basic Abilities.

Q

  • Molten Flame

    • After 1.5 seconds, Deathwing breathes stream of flame. Drains 30 Energy per second.
  • Destroyer – During Dragonflight

    • Slam down to the ground, dealing damage to enemies in the area and gaining access to Destroyer form
    • Can be in air however long you want.
    • Can land on any point with vision.
    • Other abilities have a 3 seconds cooldown after landing.

W

  • Incinerate – Destroyer Form

    • After 0.75 seconds, Deathwing flaps his wings, dealing damage to nearby enemies.
  • Lava Burst – World Breaker Form

    • After a 1 second delay, deal damage to all enemies in the area and create a pool of magma that deals damage and slows enemies. Lasts 6 seconds.
  • World Breaker – During Dragonflight

    •  Slam down to the ground, dealing damage to enemies in the area and gaining access to World Breaker form

E

  • Onslaught – Destroyer Form

    • After 0.5 seconds, Deathwing lunges in a direction dealing damage to enemies and slowing them by 35% for 2 seconds. Deathwing bites enemies at the end of the lunge, dealing additional damage.
  • Earth Shatter – World Breaker Form

    • Create a fissure of earth that deals damage to enemies hit and stuns them for 0.75 seconds.
    • Attack comes out in a cone, only effecting the edges

R

  • Cataclysm

    • After 2 seconds, Deathwing flies in the targeted direction, dealing damage on impact and leaving scortched ground that deals damage over time. Lasts 6 seconds.
    • Deathwing starts with his epic ability, but it starts on a 270 second cooldown at the beginning of a match.

Tidbits

  • Apparently Apple will be revamping their software development processes after the buggy launch of iOS 13, implementing “flags” to allow software engineers to selectively enable or disable unfinished or buggy features in testing
  • According to Phil Spencer, Microsoft’s Head of Xbox, VR support is not in the cards for the next Xbox (currently known as Project Scarlett)
    • In a statement to gaming site Stevivor, Spencer said that he thinks VR is isolation and games are a communal, kind of together experience
  • No Man’s Sky is getting yet another huge, free update- this time letting you upgrade your favourite ships all the way up to S-Class
    • The new upgrade system is being introduced alongside a lot of other pieces like a ship salvage system, inventory upgrades, the ability to have multiple multitools, and a ton of other quality-of-life improvements

Motorola’s bringing their Razr back, and as an Apple user I’m kinda envious

  • The resurrected Razr is what I’ve been dreaming of for over a decade- a modern smart flip-phone
  • At its core it’s an Android phone with a 6.2″ screen that folds down like the flip-phones of old, and the media they’ve released so far is gorgeous
  • Apparently they’ve got a special hinge that allows the display to expand into a round curve instead of folding into a crease, allowing the full display to stay completely smooth while it’s open
  • On the downside it looks like there have been some compromises to get us there- the processor is a bit slower than what you’ll find on most flagship phones nowadays, but you get a lot of RAM and 128GB of storage.
    • It also only runs Android 9 at the moment, instead of the current version 10
  • The front of the phone also has a smaller 2.7″ OLED for notifications, music controls, selfies, and such
  • The device is expected to launch sometime this January for $1500 USD, which is pretty steep for a smartphone though damn economical for the folding devices we’ve seen thusfar
  • It’s also launching in the States as a Verizon exclusive, with no unlocked version available at release, so the potential user-base is cut down a fair bit
  • Still, it’s another step forward with tech that I’d love to see Apple’s take on
  • If it catches your fancy, preorders open on December 26th

A weird bug hit households this week with the release of Pokemon Sword and Shield causing Roku devices to crash

  • The streaming content set-top boxes and, in some cases, TV’s themselves would hit a hard shutdown if the new Pokemon games were played while connected to the same network
  • Apparently the problem was caused by the games continuously sending out wireless signals looking for other Switches playing the games, which Roku attempts to interpret. When it couldn’t process the info the software would then crash
    • From the sounds of it the problem is that Pokemon is communicating on the same port that Roku uses to share update information with other local devices
  • If you’re seeing this issue Roku released a patch yesterday that should fix the issue, so you should go to Settings, System, and Update to pull the latest version
    • Though please don’t be tempted to continue your Pokemon adventure while the device is updating, or at least put the Switch in airplane mode first

Apple has replaced the controversial 15” MacBook Pro, with its problematic butterfly keyboard and tricky to get used to Touch Bar, with a fancy 16” version that fixes pretty much everything

  • The recent versions of the MacBook Pro have had a lot of vocal people complain about the low-travel keyboard that seems to get jammed up or break fairly easily (it’s so bad that there’s a free repair program at Apple Stores) and the Touch Bar, which replaced the F and Escape keys with a touchscreen
  • Enter the new 16” Macbook Pro: it replaces the 15” pretty much dollar for dollar with a larger Retina display, while also bringing back the more familiar keyboard switches from the Magic Keyboard and a physical escape key to the left of the Touch Bar, and adding in some impressively improved speakers with an extra hour of battery life
  • It can be maxed out with a ridiculous processor, 64GB of RAM, an 8TB SSD, and an 8GB AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics card

Stanford Medicine has published further results from the Apple Heart Study that kicked off in 2017, confirming that the Apple Watch accurately notify users of atrial fibrillation (an irregular heartbeat) 84% of the time

  • It also showed that it detected some problems in early stages of development that didn’t happen frequently enough for medical ECG patches to detect, specifically in younger participants
  • Two of the coolest parts of this is that a) since the study started before Apple Watches came equipped with ECG technology this just relied on the basic heart rate monitor, and b) it was all done completely remotely through an iPhone app

In accordance with new App Store guidlines, Apple has removed 181 vape-related apps and is outright banning them from its platform

  • This change seems to have been brought on by CDC reports that vaping as resulted in at least 2,172 cases of respiratory illness/injury, though many of these cases may have been related to the inclusion of vitamin E acetate in the oils used in some third-party or black market cartridges
  • One manufacturer, PAX, who relies heavily on their app to add features and change settings on their devices, is now calling on Apple to rethink its decision, saying that the ban prevents consumers from having access to important info and the ability to better control their cannabis experience
    • Apparently though the temperature can be set using the device alone, the app includes information on branded vape pods including strain information and access to state-regulated test results

Disney+ is taking fire for not providing the first 20 seasons of Simpsons in their original 4:3 “fullscreen” format until 2020

  • All the episodes currently on the service are only shown in their “remastered” state, with colours tweaked and the top and bottom of the screen chopped off
  • In some cases this might not make a big difference, but many of the 429 affected episodes including visual gags that are just gone, like when Homer takes a tour of the Duff factory and it shows Duff, Duff Lite, and Duff Dry all coming out of the same pipe
  • On the plus side, they’re finally fixing it- weeks after the launch of Disney+, they finally released a statement saying that the episodes will be made available in their original format sometime in early 2020

And lastly some great news for people looking at the Xbox Accessibility Controller- Logitech is now selling their Adaptive Gaming Kit with special buttons to take advantage of the flexibility of the controller

  • Retailing for $100 USD, It includes 12 individual buttons
    • 3 2.6” and 3 1.4” buttons with mechanical switches, four “light touch” buttons that require low force to operate, and two variable triggers similar to modern controllers
      • The kit also includes full-colour sticker labels for the buttons in all the sizes, so that you can get a full controller experience with the different customized options
      • The triggers are a big win, since pressure-sensitive controls are apparently rare when it comes to this kind of accessibility
    • It also includes two velcro-style boards you can mount them all on in different configurations, whatever is most comfortable to you

Tidbits

  • Just in case you thought capitalism wasn’t completely broken, Amazon is apparently paying $0 in taxes in the US for 2018 after reporting more than $11.2B in profits
  • Heliogen, a clean energy company backed by Bill Gates, has apparently found a way to use AI and a field of mirrors to reflect so much sunlight that they generate heats over 1000 degrees C
    • This means that, for the first time, solar energy can be used for high-energy industrial applications like manufacturing cement, steel, and glass
  • Continuing the constant update train, Apple’s released iOS and iPadOS 13.2.3 this week, including fixes for Mail, Files, and Notes search, viewing attachments in Messages, and downloading new emails and content from Exchange accounts
  • Good news for Origin launcher users, your account wasn’t (probably) hacked this week
    • Many people online received an email saying they’ve redeemed an Origin Access membership code, even if they haven’t, but apparently that was just EA’s way of gifting a month of Origin Access Basic to users opted in to its two-factor authentication
  • Half-Life is back! (kind of)
    • Valve went to Twitter this week to announce Half-Life: Alyx, their flagship VR game, that’ll be unveiled later this week.
    • So far it looks like this is a prequel set between Half-Lifes 1 and 2, further confirming Valve can’t count to three
    • We’ll have all the details in our next episode once they’ve been released

Pokemon Sword and Shield are under fire ahead of their release this weekend because of weird limitations and broken promises

  • First up is the fact that even though new Pokemon are being introduced, bringing the total up over 1,000, they’ve actually removed many older ones from the game
    • For instance, Bulbasaur and Squirtle were cut but we’ve seen Charizard in trailers so far
    • Apparently the game’s producer, Junichi Masuda, worried that the new ones would be overshadowed by fan favourites, and that it would be too time-consuming to include all the different Pokemon
    • Many fans are disappointed though, because not being able to catch some is one thing but since they’re being completely excluded from the game you can’t even trade them forward
      • There are hardcore fans that complete the National Pokedex, owning every single Pokemon, in each game as it comes out. This is the first time that it won’t be possible
    • The worst part of this is that they said it would be too time-consuming to rebuild all the Pokemon from scratch, and they didn’t have the manpower to do all 800+ from the previous generations, but dataminers have confirmed that the character models are taken almost completely from the 3DS games
  • Not only have they removed Pokemon, but they’ve also removed some random moves (like Karate Chop and Hidden Power) so that even if a Pokemon is included in the game it can’t be traded forward if it knows one of them
  • Some are saying that if The Pokemon Company wanted to clear the way for the new generation, they should have just started with a clean slate and let this be its own isolated experience instead of picking and choosing which previous gen moves and monsters would be brought forward
  • And in one last strange little feature, the sound control settings are locked behind an optional item
    • There’s an NPC in one of the cities that gives you ‘Hi-tech Earbuds’, and unless you speak to them the options for changing Background Music, Sound Effects, and Pokemon Cries are not available in your settings screen.

Google has quietly partnered with Ascension, the USA’s second-largest health system, and gained access to medical records for tens of millions of Americans

  • In what they’ve code-named Project Nightingale, at least 150 Google employees have access to patient health info including diagnoses, test results, and hospital records, including names and birthdates
  • Both Google and Ascension say the project is compliant with federal health information privacy protections, but the more you spread this kind of thing around in the cloud the more vulnerable it’s going to be
    • Whether that’s actually the case remains to be seen, as after the Wall Street Journal broke the story the project is now under investigation by the Office for Civil Rights in the Department of Health and Human Services

Bringing more ammunition to the Delete Facebook bonfire, users have discovered that Facebook actively uses your iPhone’s camera while you’re scrolling through your timeline

  • It only works if you’ve granted the app permission to use your camera, so that’s something at least
  • Facebook has apparently confirmed the issue, calling it a bug, but say they have no evidence of photos or videos uploaded due to it

Many smartphone owners were surprised this week when they started receiving delayed text messages from Valentine’s Day this year

  • Apparently the glitch was due to the cross carrier messaging system, causing cell companies across north america to send or re-send random texts from that day
  • People reported everything from random messages, Valentines from exes, or even messages from people who have since died

Tidbits

  • Good news everyone, they seem to have fixed the crime against nature that was the live-action Sonic model
    • Instead of weirdly almost-human proportions, Sonic is back to his usual spindly limbs and big hands, feet, and head
  • Disney+ is here, and for $9 CAD/month or $90/year you can get access to decades of Disney-owned content along with new stuff like The Mandalorian and The World According to Jeff Goldblum
    • One thing of note is that the service brings us yet another re-edit of the Han Solo / Greedo interaction, removing the straight-on shot of the exploding dummy and making it look like Greedo shouted something right before being killed
    • I do really want to watch The Mandalorian though

AirPods Pro review

  • Very comfortable, though with the in-ear design it’s slightly harder to get them seated right (but I had pretty much perfect ears for the old style, so others may see it as an improvement), and the noise cancelling is solid
  • Transparency mode is ridiculously good, and it automatically switches to that when you’re just using one so you don’t have one blocked up ear
  • Announce messages seemed like a gimmick until I was busy on my computer and Siri read my incoming texts unobtrusively
  • The case looks bigger, but the just turned it on its side and stretched it a little, so it totally still fits in that 5th pocked on jeans
  • Also enjoying improvements from Gen 2, since I’m coming from G1- Hey Siri and wireless charging are handy to have
  • If you’re in the market for some new ANC headphones these are solid, but if you’ve got a good pair or are already using AirPods 2 then they’re a little harder to justify

Blizzard president J Allen Brack took a moment before the Blizzcon opening ceremonies to apologize for their punishment of professional Hearthstone player Blitzchung’s public support of Hong Kong’s protests

  • In the toothless statement he went on to say though that “Blizzard had the opportunity to bring the world together in a tough Hearthstone esports moment”
  • A few problems here:
    • It wasn’t a “tough Hearthstone esports moment”
    • He passed up another opportunity to “bring the world together” by saying anything at all in support of Hong Kong
    • He said nothing about the groveling they did to China on social media after the fact
    • And they still punished not only Blitzchung but also the commentators that were interviewing him

Overwatch 2 was announced, as expected, and we’ve got all the details

  • So it looks like this is kind of a pseudo-sequel; they’re releasing an updated game UI with revamped/remastered graphics and gameplay, along with multiple new heroes, maps, and a game mode, all for free for existing Overwatch players.
    • The new Push game mode, coming to quick play and competitive, has the two teams competing over a neutral payload that gets pushed in either direction based on who controls it
    • There will be four new maps: Toronto, Gothenburg, Monte Carlo, and Rio De Janerio
    • We also got a sneak peak at a couple of the upcoming heroes- Sojourn, the first Canadian OW hero that uses a cool gun that looks like a covenant sniper rifle, and Echo, an omnic that’s been teased in the base game for a while now
    • All skins, cosmetics, and other progress will carry over seamlessly
  • Where Overwatch 2 itself comes in to play is a new look for all heroes, a new co-op story mode and hero missions, and new hero talents for the PVE modes
    • The new modes seem to be permanent co-op modes like Halloween Terror or the Archives missions
    • Hero talents will have you levelling up and customizing hero abilities and ultimates to suit your playstyle
  • One nice thing with the new stuff coming is they can grow the canon inside of the game itself- right now we get lore dumps online but it has no real impact in-game
    • Overwatch re-forming and characters meeting or reuniting will have actual impact, instead of the current PVP grab-bag of characters having amusing interactions inside the dropship
  • If you want all of that stuff, you’ll have to buy the new… expansion, I guess? Plug-in? when it comes out at some point in the future for some currently undisclosed price
  • All in all it looks like they’re doing a fair amount to breath new life into the 3.5 year old shooter, though you’ll end up buying it again to see everything they have to offer

  • Real-time multiplayer is coming to Mario Kart Tour, but for now it will be limited to a beta offering only for Gold Pass subscribers
    • There aren’t any details on if it will require a subscription once it’s fully released, but if it does I can see it being a pretty sparse game with the subscription price costing more than their main console offering, Nintendo Switch Online
  • Sony’s PS4 is officially the second best selling console of all time, with about 2/3rds of the sales of the PS2
    • It’s doubtful that it’ll ever be number 1 though, as even though Sony says they’ll support it until at least 2021 the PS5 is expected to hit in 2020’s holiday season
  • DeepMind’s AlphaStar AI has officially hit Grandmaster status in Starcraft II, beating 99.8% of ranked human players with all three races, and I for one welcome our new robot overlords
  • Rudy Giuliani, one month after being named Trump’s cybersecurity advisor, apparently had to go to an Apple Store to wipe and restore his iPhone after getting it locked down from 10 unsuccessful passcode attempts
    • Many experts criticized the move, saying that there’s too much risk of employees gaining access to sensitive government information on the phone or in his iCloud backups
  • I don’t know how I missed this, but ghostwriter is getting rebooted on Apple TV+!
    • 90’s kids might remember the series running from 92 to 95 on PBS

Alert: Anyone still using an iPhone 5 should update their software immediately

  • As of November 3rd core functionality of the phones will break due to a GPS bug with daylight saving time, and if you haven’t already updated to iOS 10.3.4 by then you’ll have to manually do so through your computer- iCloud connections and over-the-air updates will no longer work

Samsung has released an update to address the fingerprint fiasco on their Galaxy S10 and Note 10 devices

  • A couple weeks ago we talked about the problem with Samsung’s revolutionary new ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor, and how by applying a screen protector to the device you can unlock it with anything from a piece of fruit to a small toy
  • Samsung’s now officially released a fix for this problem, and they’ve said they’ll be sending notifications to all users who have registered their fingerprints in their devices
    • They’re also asking anyone that has registered their fingerprint with a screen protector applied to remove it, then delete and re-register their prints, since the stored prints may include “incorrect” info
  • Time will tell if Samsung can earn back the trust of the security community though, with many banks worldwide pulling fingerprint verification from their apps on varying ranges of Samsung and Galaxy devices
    • The Bank of China even blocked it for Tab S6 users, which uses a standard optical sensor instead of the in-display ultrasound

Just days before Blizzcon is slated to begin, reputable leaks have popped up on ESPN of all places showing what appears to be Overwatch 2

  • From the looks of things it will be introducing a new PVE experience, possibly similar to some of their event game modes that have had a team of heroes playing against waves of enemies, as well as new game modes, maps, and heroes
  • There’s also new artwork hidden on the Blizzard Gear website featuring a group of Overwatch heroes charging into battle including Echo, a previously teased but unannounced character that may be going live alongside the expected announcement
    • There are also some minor costume changes in the new artwork, with Tracer, and Mei getting subtle tweaks and Genji wearing a hoodie and pants over his cybernetic body
  • It will be interesting to see what gets announced at Blizzcon, how many of these leaks get confirmed, and what the fate of Overwatch 1 will be with players having spent so many hours and earned so many unlocks but having its sequel coming down the pipe

Apple sneakily announced and released their new AirPods Pro this week, and they’ve got a lot of the changes I was hoping for after seeing Google’s Pixel Buds earlier in October

  • The redesign brings in rubber tips more in line with modern earbuds, smaller stems, active noise cancellation, and a fancy “Transparency” mode
  • They’ve also kept ear detection, which is my favourite feature of my old Gen 1 AirPods, but have swapped out tapping on the buds to activate Siri for squeezing the stem to control music more traditionally- one squeeze for pause/play, two for next track, three for back, along with a long squeeze to switch from ANC to Transparency
    • Apparently there’s some Apple trickery at work that makes it feel and sound like clicking a button, though there aren’t any actual moving “button”
    • They also still have the ridiculously simply pairing process with iDevices, where you just have to open the case nearby and tap the screen. New to iOS 13.2 though, you can also use this to temporarily share audio with a friends AirPods and have it playing through both sets simultaneously
  • So let’s dive in to what’s new:
    • Rubber tips – they’ve got the usual three sizes to customize your fit, but instead of having a little vent hole in the rubber like Google did to equalize pressure they actually have a vent system running through the AirPod itself
      • The vent doesn’t sacrifice water resistance though, as these are rated IPX4 and good for exercising and sweating all over
      • They also have a fit test you can run where it uses microphones both in and outside of your ear to gauge the seal around the Pods and see if you should adjust the sizing
    • Speaking of those microphones, the active noise cancellation uses them along with fancy software to process your environment 200 times a second and remove background noise by sending out special customized anti-noise
    • They also do some adaptive equalization, tuning the frequencies of the music to the shape of your ear to optimize audio quality
    • And then there’s the new Transparency Mode, which lets you hear your environment and your own voice while offering just a hint of noise cancellation to keep things clear and understandable if you want to hear traffic or transit announcements
      • You can swap between Transparency and ANC on the fly by squeezing the stem, from your iPhone’s Control Centre, or on your Apple Watch
  • Battery life is pretty much unchanged depending on your usage- turning off ANC and Transparency gets you the usual 5 hours of listening, while turning them on takes it down to 4.5, and you’ll see 3.5 hours of talk time on the phone. The case amps that up to 24 hours of listening, 18 hours of talk, and it can be charged via Lightning or a Qi wireless charge mat
  • All that can be yours for $250 USD or $329 CAD, and they’re available to order or pick up now

Apple’s also released a bunch of software updates

  • As I mentioned earlier iOS 13.2 is out, with not only audio sharing but also Deep Fusion photos for the iPhone 11 (taking multiple exposures using all the lenses and fusing them into one high-quality photo), and the ability to control whether your Siri dictation is used to improve the service and, if not, delete anything they might have archived
    • You can opt out by going to Settings > Privacy > Analytics & Improvements > Improve Siri & Dictation and toggling the slider off
    • And you can delete any saved Siri interactions from Apple’s servers by going to Settings > Siri & Search > Siri & Dictation History, and tapping on Delete Siri & Dictation History
    • This is all a much-needed improvement, especially from a company that claims to care so much about the privacy and security of your data
  • watchOS 6.1 brings support for the new AirPods, as well as finally allowing version 6 to be installed on Series 1 and 2 watches
  • and macOS 10.15.1 also brings AirPods Pro support and those Siri privacy settings
  • They did release audioOS 13.2 for HomePods as well, which brought the ability to differentiate between multiple voices and easily hand off audio by bringing your phone near the speaker, but it was soon pulled after users online started saying it bricked their HomePods
    • If you’ve already updated your HomePods Apple recommends you don’t reset or reboot it, even if iOS prompts you to, until they issue a fix.
    • In the meantime, if you’ve been affected by this issue you’ll need to contact Apple support and have it repaired or replaced

The Outer Worlds – Josh’s Impression

  • Great RPG
    • I’m not generally a fan of RPG’s but this one has really taken me by surprise
  • The setting is, as other have put it, is like 1984 by George Orwell, but with corporations instead of the government
    • When faster than light technology was discovered, companies spread out and bought the rights to many star systems.
    • This story takes place in a system controlled by The Board
      • The Board is made of the heads of massive companies that control everything
    • The technology is similar to Bioshock
      • Sort of less pipes and steam, more plug-n-play tech and Edison bulbs
      • But the main hook of it is fascinating technological advancements that can be maintained with a pipe wrench
    • Weapons are neat too
      • There has been knives, scythes, hammers, staves, all sorts of things
      • For ranged weapons there are your handguns, rifles, heavy machine guns, flame throwers and grenade launchers
      • Best part is ammo is only 3 types, Light, Heavy and Energy
    • Armour is simple as well
    • Stats
    • Companions
    • Healing
    • Time Dilation
  • Great conversations
    • Funny
    • Skills do well in it
  • Not too long
    • Has an end!
  • Lots of replay

Tibits

  • Apple’s copyright lawsuit against mobile device virtualization company Corellium over offering virtual iOS for development and testing hit an interesting development, when Corellium fired back saying Apple owed them $300K because they make it easier for security researchers to track down bugs
    • Corellium claims that its product is fair use and makes the world a better place, though the fact that one of their customers sells hacking tools to law enforcement and intelligence agencies makes it tough to believe in their altruism
  • In an interesting move EA has announced they’ll start publishing games on Steam again, leading many to speculate on their Origin launcher soon being shut down
    • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is already up on Steam, and other major titles will hit in the coming months. We’ll see multiplayer titles like Apex Legends next year, with cross-play between Steam and Origin versions
