Top story- seriously, it’s time to delete Facebook

  • The Daily Beast is reporting that newer Facebook users are being interrupted by a message asking for their email password
    • The message says “To continue using Facebook you’ll need to confirm your email.”, and then goes on to say you can do that automatically by entering your email account’s password into a form below the message
    • In order to bypass this you need to click on the “Need help?” link in one corner of the page, and then they offer more conventional means like sending you an email with a confirmation link
    • They say they won’t store your password, but considering the massive “Keeping passwords secure” fiasco of 600M cleartext passwords kept floating around at the company for the last 7 years I think we’ve got to take that with a shaker of salt
  • Not to mention, cybersecurity researchers just recently found hundreds of millions of Facebook user records on publicly accessible Amazon Cloud servers
    • They want to take all your info, and then they don’t care who else gets into it as long as they can sell it to the highest bidders

There’s a PSVR-exclusive Iron Man game coming, and I need it now

  • I’m not kidding, give it to me
  • Based on early demos it looks like they’ve nailed flying around in first person as Iron Man with full motion controls
  • It’s apparently separate from the films and comics but using them as an inspiration, exploring Tony Stark as his own worst enemy as well as facing off against Ghost, a supervillain going after Stark and Pepper Potts
  • It looks fantastic, and it’s apparently slated for release sometime this year

Apple has officially confirmed that AirPower is dead, likely due to the technical challenges of their ambitious design

  • The weirdest part of this is the package for the new AirPods wireless charging case actually includes an illustration of the AirPower mat, but they’ve finally definitively decided its fate
  • They wanted to let you charge up to three devices by putting them anywhere on the mat, while also giving the ability to monitor battery levels of all three wirelessly
  • Very ambitious, but with the current level of tech just not feasible
  • On the plus side, you can just get a few decent wireless charging pucks online for less than AirPower would have cost

Avengers: Endgame tickets are already for sale, and there’s even a way to see the movie early if you feel like being slightly insane

  • In case you haven’t heard, Endgame broke records this week and had the biggest day one of any theatrical presale title ever, taking down the previous champ, The Force Awakens, in the first six hours of tickets being available
    • It got to the point where #AvengersEndgametickets was trending on Twitter with technical complaints, because the sites couldn’t keep up with demand
  • Both AMX and Alamo Drafthouses in the US are running marathon screenings, leading up to a showing of Endgame, if you feel up to the 22 movie, 60 hour challenge
  • And your reward? Seeing Endgame one hour before the general public
  • This is definitely something that would take dedication, and we’d love to hear from any listeners that might have taken part

Gundam 40th and Hello Kitty 45th anniversaries

  • To celebrate the 45th anniversary of Hello Kitty and the 40th anniversary of Gundam. They are having a crossover event!
  • So far there is only a video, where Kitty is at home, sees Amuro, fighting in his Gundam on TV. Kitty gets all flustered and runs out of her house.
  • Then it goes to space, Amuro still fighting, and a break in combat, has his sensors go off. He turns and sees a giant Hello Kitty mech appear. May be Big Zam sized? and the video ends there. All characters are represented in their original animation styles.

Homeworld Lego sets

  • A company called Brick Formation, has the license to make sets based on Homeworld.
  • For those out of the loop, Homeworld is a 3D RTS. Where it takes place in space, and has lots of cool spaceships.
  • It is made by Relic Entertainment, which was founded in Vancouver, and Homeworld was their first game released in 1999.
  • These parts are genuine Lego pieces, since Lego has a Fair Play rule. So they are genuine Lego, kits designed, packaged and sold by Brick Formation. But the Lego company, is not affiliated with this in any way, other than being the ones that designed the building bricks.
  • They are beautiful sets. They all come with a display stand, which also holds a description card for the ship. They look fantastic, because they made all the ships in the ’studless’ style of building. Where building studs are not visible in the final product.
  • This quality does come at a price. A smaller ship, the Hiigaran Interceptor, which built is 12 inches long, is $250. And a large example, Hiigaran Destroyer, 20 inches long, is $575.
  • If the idea of 3D RTS, all in space, makes you interested, a remaster was released in 2015, available on Mac and PC.

Tidbits

  • Google’s adding a “sponsored content” (read, advertising) section to Android TV, and in their pilot program pushed the update to a bunch of devices including Sony smart TVs
    • So if you decided to shell out thousands on a nice 4K TV, and use the Android TV features, congratulations- you’re now forced to look at ads every time you use it
  • Valve is teasing their new stand-alone VR setup with a swanky website
    • It’s pretty scarce on the details, but it looks like it’s called the Index and it’ll be here in May
  • No Man’s Sky VR is getting some amazing reviews, and the hype train is a-rolling once more
    • And as a nice bonus, it will be playable both with the Move and Dualshock controllers (though if given the option, I think motion controls are usually superior)
  • Verizon’s launching an actual 5G network this week, compared to AT&T’s logo change
    • Speeds look solid, testing out at over 760 Mbps, but you won’t see them unless you’re in specific areas of either Chicago or Minneapolis, have the Moto Z3 phone, and pair it with the 5G-enabled Moto Mod (which, with it’s extra processing, battery power, and antennas, it damn near a phone in its own right)
  • Lastly, for your weekly dose of wtf, a California hospital is being sued by 81 women for secretly filming them in labour and delivery rooms while undergoing very personal procedures
    • The women say they didn’t consent, and would not have if given the choice
    • Cherry on the shit sundae, the videos were stored on various computers- some of which didn’t even require passwords to use
    • The hospital claims the cameras were there to catch a thief stealing drugs from anesthesia carts in the rooms, but that seems like a pretty idiotic move all told

Recommend American Gods: The Author’s Preferred Text

(recommended the Amazon Prime show, which is now partway through season 2 back in ep 118)
  • It’s interesting to see some of the differences between the show and the book, though there will be spoilers for one in the other so choose wisely
  • It’s such a great take on mythology, with gods being among us and powered by belief and worship, so you end up with someone like Media contrasting with the older gods the settlers and slaves brought with them to the Americas
  • Neil Gaiman’s always a good read

      • We saw this offered by Twitch back in October, and before that on Xbox One in September 2017
  • Twitch
    • It’s not a game, but it is handy- they’re giving away up to a year of Nintendo Switch Online
      • If you’re a Twitch Prime subscriber you can get three months of NSO for free, then 60 days after you redeem that you can grab another 9 months.
      • Best part, if you’re already a subscriber the time just stacks on to your current subscription
      • One thing to note- redeeming the offer will turn on automatic renewal, so if you don’t want to pay for NSO after the free time is up you’ll want to disable that in your Nintendo eShop account settings

Top story of the week, it’s time to pick up your copy of No Man’s Sky on PS4 before prices go back up!

  • Though the digital edition is still full price, many have seen discs offered for $10-20
  • And why do you care? Because existing owners on PS4 and PC are getting free VR support this summer as part of the Beyond update
    • This is something that people immediately looked for when it first released in 2016, and the fact that it’s coming now, for free, is pretty amazing
  • Apparently this won’t just be a VR mode, and the studio is billing it as the “entire game brought to life in virtual reality”
    • They’ve also mentioned that multiplayer will be supported with both VR and nonVR players together
  • Looking at the trailer they’re supporting full motion controls even while piloting your ship or exocraft
    • This is gonna be good

Apple’s Show Time event was this week, and here are some of the highlights for what we’ll see from them this year

  • They’re getting their own credit card, working with MasterCard and Goldman Sachs, with some interesting security features and underwhelming rewards
    • The physical card is laser-etched titanium with no visible numbers
      • If you want to buy stuff online you’ll need to get the card info from the Wallet app, which has a dynamic number for each device you own that you can regenerate on-demand
      • The physical card seems to be mainly a backup if you need swipe or chip-and-pin instead of tap
    • On the rewards side of things, they’re offering fairly average cash back rewards while pushing to keep those rewards inside the Apple ecosystem
    • And it also has some built-in analytics to help you see how you’re spending your money, with a neat feature using machine learning to translate those weird merchant names you see on your credit card statement into actual businesses
  • Apple News+ is folding in a bunch of news and magazine subscriptions to a single app for $10/month, which isn’t bad all said and done if you read magazines
    • Apparently the content will be specifically formatted for the app, instead of just PDF magazine pages displayed on your phone
  • Apple Arcade is an interesting one- for a subscription price that they haven’t announced yet, you get access to a bunch of new and exclusive games that can be played on- or offline on the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV
    • Seems to basically be Apple’s answer to the Xbox Game Pass
  • And then there’s Apple TV Channels and TV+
    • Channels seems to be like if you sliced up Netflix and purchased specific bits and pieces, looking to bring things like HBO and other streaming services traditionally locked behind cable subscriptions to the internet at large
      • Channels will be on not only Apple hardware, but also some smart TV’s, Roku, and Amazon devices
    • And then TV+ is where they’re hosting their fancy new content which we heard a bit about but didn’t see any trailers or much detail at all. The presentation seemed mostly to be “Look, Steven Spielberg! And Jason Momoa! And Oprah! Wow!”

Facebook… did a good thing?

  • They’ve announced that their terms of service will be updated next week with a new anti-hate rule
    • Specifically, this means anything falling under white nationalism or white separatism will be banned from the platform
  • Apparently the reason it’s taken them this long is because it wanted to leave room for national pride, but there’s no reason you can’t be proud of your country without being hateful about it
  • With the new ban, Facebook also says that when users search for terms connected to white supremacy on its platforms, they’ll be redirected to Life After Hate- a non-profit organization founded by former members of hate organizations offering crisis intervention, education, support, and outreach to former or current members of similar groups
    • They didn’t go into details on exactly what the search terms are, and whether searching for hateful memes or talk show hosts would trigger things the way using nazi search terms would

But don’t worry if Facebook doing something in the right direction confuses you, they also did a dumb thing to balance it out

  • Facebook has posted an article called “Keeping Passwords Secure”, in which they fess up to keeping passwords for hundreds of millions of users stored in plain text, dating all the way back to 2012
    • They were accessible by over 20,000 employees, not to mention people getting access through possibly nefarious means
    • At this point Facebook says no abuse seems to have happened, but really how would they know for sure

Tidbits

  • watchOS 5.2 released this week, bringing ECG support to Hong Kong and many parts of the EU
    • Still no word on a Canadian release
  • A crisp new trailer for Borderlands 3 dropped this week, and it looks as fun as ever
    • Fingers crossed they recapture the magic of the main series after the slightly-off release of the Pre-Sequel
  • Apparently Nintendo is working on two new Switch models, working on a two-pronged approach
    • According to the Wall Street Journal, one will have some sort of enhanced capabilities, while the other will be a cheaper option removing things like the fancy vibration feature to become a successor to the 3DS
  • In a delicious bit of karma, AT&T’s “5G E” service, which has drawn a lot of fire for not actually being 5G, has apparently tested out to actually be, on average, slightly slower than their competitors 4G networks
    • I’m not sure how this will affect Sprint’s lawsuit over the false advertising, but I’d like to think some lawyers just got very happy
  • Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves will be back in Bill and Ted 3: Face the Music
    • The announcement video is some pure Bill and Ted nostalgia with the actors jumping right back into their roles as the Wyld Stallyns and thanking fans for their support

Recommend Just 6 Weeks

  • It’s an free app that sets up a workout regimen to get you to 100 pushups in 6 weeks, with paid options for other things like situps or pullups
  • I’ve gone from 33 pushups across 5 reps to 94 in about 5 weeks
  • It does ramp up a little aggressively, so I’ve had to repeat workouts before moving on (technically I’m partway through week 4), but it’s been good with not a lot of time commitment
  • It’s also been nice having it keep track of the numbers for me, since I don’t really feel different and then I see I’ve about tripled what I could do a month and a half ago

Nintendo is bringing VR to the Switch with a Google Cardboard-style Labo kit

  • Set for release on April 12th, there will be a couple different ways to get your hands on it
    • The full $80USD set will include six toy-con projects: the VR goggles, a blaster, a camera, a bird, a wind pedal, and an elephant
    • There’s also going to be a starter kit with just the goggles and blaster for $40USD, and two expansion packs for $20 each with the remaining toy-cons
  • There aren’t a lot of details on what kind of toy-con garage support this will have, but it looks like a fun way to get into VR without a massive investment

In a move that really cements how impenetrable some people want technology to be, the new USB 3.2 protocol is changing everything for some reason

  • In a move they say is to make things “easier”, the USB Implementers Forum says that all USB 3 is now called USB 3.2
  • The original USB 3, that uses the old standard plugs, is now USB 3.2 Gen 1 and marketed as SuperSpeed USB
  • USB 3.1, which doubles the speed and uses either standard USB or USB-C, is now USB 3.2 Gen 2 and marketed as SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps
  • And the new USB 3.2, which doubles the speed again and can only use USB-C cables, is now USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 and marketed as SuperSpeed USB 20Gbps
  • So at the end of the day we’ve got all those blue USB ports called USB 3.2 regardless of what kind of connector they use or what speed they support, so this is just a consumer nightmare

BioWare is trying to play catch-up and patch Anthem into a complete, stable title

  • On top of some major issues with weapon damage and level scaling, causing your starting weaponry to be the most powerful gun in the game despite the damage numbers appearing lower, they’re having a bunch of stability issues
  • Latest reports have it not only suffering from crashes and connection issues, but in many cases completely crashing PlayStation 4 consoles to the point where they need to be rebooted in safe mode
    • Some users even claimed that their consoles were completely bricked, but according to BioWare all cases they’re aware of can be powered back up if you manually power it down and restart it. They do ask that if you’re experiencing anything different to contact @EAHelp on Twitter so they can investigate
    • Even with this response though, many users are reaching out to Sony and receiving refunds for the game because of these issues
  • In BioWare’s favour, they say that they’ve “discovered a bunch of things that were causing crashes” and are addressing them in a patch releasing next week
  • This patch won’t be addressing the damage scaling issues, but that will apparently be fixed “real soon”

Sony ended production of the PS Vita this week, but some good news is they’ve officially released a remote-play app for iOS (in addition to the existing Android, Mac, and Windows apps)

  • If you want to actually play games you’ll want a bluetooth game controller though, since you can’t connect PS4 controllers to iDevices and the touchscreen controls are a little much

Disney’s announced their streaming service, Disney Plus, will launch later this year and contain the entire Disney motion picture library

  • This is a pretty big deal, since it basically means the end of the Disney Vault marketing trick that they used to create artificial scarcity and limit availability of home video versions of their films
  • In addition to the massive backlog of content, it’s also going to have a bunch of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as well as new content made specifically for the service, like the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian

Tidbits

  • Good guy Nintendo has reportedly asked its mobile game developer partners to back off on in-app purchases, pushing for pay-once apps to stop nickle-and-diming players
  • Microsoft will be releasing an all-digital edition of the Xbox One S for preorder this April
    • There’s no word on the price yet, with some speculating it’ll aim for <$200, but it could be a solid streaming and digital gaming box as long as they give it a decent sized hard drive
    • It may also be part of a program where you take your physical games to a Microsoft Store and trade them for download codes
  • The first music pack for Beat Saber is coming on March 14th!
    • Also bringing UI updated to support future packs, filter songs, and make it easier to select different game modes
  • Devil May Cry 5’s deluxe edition lets you swap the in-game cinematics with original pre-vis live action cut scenes, and they’re amazing
    • Complete with gun spins, stunt work, and action figures spinning through the air

Alan Recommends Gokushufudou

  • Features a Yakuza legend dedicating the same energy that took him to the top to being the best house-husband, making delicious meals and going to aerobics
  • It’s a little one-note, with each chapter kind of standing alone and not really building a arc, but really entertaining

Top story this week, Reggie Fils-Aime is stepping down as president of Nintendo of America effective this April
  • After being with the company for 16 years, and leading it for 13 of them, he’s moving on to spend more time with family and friends
  • The reins will be passed to Doug Bowser, the current head of sales and marketing, who has been working with Reggie for the past four years
    • They’re already leaning into the memes, with Bowser posting a photo thanking everyone for the warm welcome that has plushes of Mario and Luigi tied up together on a shelf
  • Reggie’s posted a heart-felt goodbye on the Nintendo of America Twitter account, thanking fans for their never-ending support and passion
In a bit of a roller coaster, some large Pokemon Go YouTube channels were deleted, then restored, this week
  • Apparently they had some innocuous videos flagged, and according to YouTube they were reviewed and given strikes for sexual content, specifically involving minors
    • This process even had one user’s GMail account completely disabled, leaving them unable to contact YouTube through normal means
  • Once the channels got in touch with YouTube to argue their case though, they were reinstated before the end of the day, saying that the YouTubers were taken down mistakenly
  • The root of the mistake seems to be the titles of the videos, referring to combat power as CP
    • It’s a common term in the Pokemon Go community, but it’s also unfortunately used as shorthand for child pornography
  • In the end it’s good that YouTube is making these kinds of efforts, but considering Google’s pockets I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a human to look at cases once they’ve been flagged for review
Niantic is bringing some quality of life improvements for everyone not playing Pokemon Go, to settle the class-action lawsuit from annoyed homeowners
  • The app will delivery courtesy reminders whenever 10 or more people are playing in the same location
  • They’ll also work with public parks to remind users of a location’s hours and make the associated stops inaccessible when closed, open a complaints reporting site, and grant removals for Pokestops within 40m of a single-family property
  • The named plaintiffs are also getting $1000 each, while the lawyers are requesting over $8M in fees and expenses
Samsung unveiled a bunch of new tech at their Unpacked event this week, and we’ve got a quick overview
  • Folding phones are finally here, and they’re absurdly expensive and unnecessary!
    • Samsung has announced the Galaxy Fold, launching April 26th and starting at $1980 USD
    • It strikes me as the worst of both worlds- when unfolded it looks like a typical Android tablet, which have generally been lacking, and when folded it’s a really thick phone with gigantic bezels (seems like almost a full inch each on the top and bottom)
    • It feels like this is basically a folding tablet, with the exterior screen kind of tacked on to make it also a phone
    • If nothing else it will bring the foldable display technology some more popularity and inspire others to innovate further with the tech
  • They announced the new Galaxy S10 with an interesting ultrasonic fingerprint scanner hidden behind the somewhat excessive 6.7” edge-to-edge display
  • It’s also 5G ready, which is jumping the gun a bit because the networks sure aren’t
  • Samsung also announced Galaxy Buds, an Airpods competitor that can wirelessly charge from the S10 using PowerShare, and a fancy new batch of smartwatches to complete their matching set

Facebook may be facing multi-billion dollar fines after their role on the Cambridge Analytica user information scandal
  • The root of the investigation is whether Facebook violated the terms of a 2011 settlement with the FTC, prohibiting Facebook from misrepresenting the privacy or security of user info and requiring consent before overriding privacy settings, after they were found to have “deceived consumers by telling them they could keep their information on Facebook private, and then repeatedly allowing it to be shared and made public.”
  • The current investigation started in March of last year, after 87 million users’ info was given to a political consulting firm that did work with the Trump campaign
    • I’d be surprised if they weren’t also taking into account some of the more recent revelations, like making the posts of 14 million users public despite privacy settings set otherwise and giving away private information and photos left and right
  • If they fight the fines, which is sounds like they may based on their usual denials and non-statements, they could face a massive privacy lawsuit from the FTC and the US Government
Speaking of Facebook and bad data policies, a bunch of apps have come under fire for sending personal information to Facebook without user consent or controls
  • Among some of the worst offenders tested by the Wall Street Journal are
    • Realtor.com sends info on the listings that a user views, including location, price, and if they’re marked as a favourite
Instant Heart Rate: HR Monitor, the most popular heart-rate app on iOS, sends a user’s heart rate to Facebook immediately after it’s recorded
    • Flo Period & Ovulation Tracker tells Facebook when a user is having their period, or if they’re trying to get pregnant
Tidbits
  • Razer is closing down their game store after being open only 10 months
    • They were just reselling Steam and Uplay games, so as long as you make sure to activate your codes before Feb 28 you’ll be safe
    • They’ll also apparently still honour any existing preorders
  • Pokemon Go is now allowing players to switch teams, with a couple asterisks
    • It costs 1000 coins (earnable in gyms or by spending money), and can only be done once per year
  • The Netflix/Marvel partnership is officially over, with no more seasons of The Punisher and Jessica Jones, the last two Marvel series being made on the platform, being produced
    • The third season of Jessica Jones will still air sometime this year, but that’ll be the end
    • Time will tell if the eventual Marvel streaming service will continue the existing Netflix stories, or if they’ll need to reboot things
  • The final pieces of Shovel Knight, initially set to release on April 9th, have been delayed by “several months”
    • Originally revealed with a 2018 launch date, Shovel Knight: King of Cards, Shovel Knight Showdown, and the physical release of Treasure Trove have all been pushed back to an unspecified date this year, along with the associated amiibo three-pack
Recommend the Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne
  • It’s an urban fantasy series that feels like a blend of The Dresden Files and American Gods, creating a world with people, monsters, gods, and goddesses from a wide array of mythologies and pantheons
  • It all comes together really well and sucks you in, with the books feeding in to eachother pretty directly
  • Including novellas I’ve devoured 17 books in the last three weeks, and I can’t wait to read the last few and see how it ends

  • Epic Games

News

Xbox Live will soon be spreading its wings and getting on iOS, Android, and Switch

  • A session description from the 2019 Game Developers Conference seems to have blown a big reveal- that Microsoft is releasing a new cross-platform developer kit for mobile gaming
  • There’s no mention of a launch window, but it appears to be a first-look at connecting players between iOS, Android, Switch, XBox, and Windows
  • This is really cool news, and perhaps not a huge surprise after their cross-platform Minecraft ads with Nintendo
  • When asked for comment a Microsoft spokesperson told Polygon the company has “nothing additional to share at this time”

Biohackers, which is now added to Teledildonics on my list of favourite words, have encoded malware into a strand of DNA

  • It was just a proof of concept, but they’ve shown it’s possible to encode software into physical strands of DNA so that when a sequencer analyzes it the resulting data becomes a program that takes control of the underlying computer
  • In this case they managed to write code into physical DNA that, when compressed with industry-standard software, hacks that software and breaks out into the memory of the computer to run its own arbitrary commands
  • It seems pretty far out, but a lot of these programs weren’t written with security in mind. No one was expecting they’d need an anti-virus on a gene sequencer
  • As sequencing becomes more commonplace it may eventually become a real vector for attacks
  • Companies could even put malicious code in the DNA of genetically modified products to protect trade secrets
  • It’s something that we won’t need to work with for quite some time, but when it does arrive we’ll be glad we started thinking about it now

We’ve reached peak crypto-currency

Canadian exchange QuadrigaCX can’t repay $190M to clients after its founder, the only person who knew the passwords to its cold storage, unexpectedly died overseas.

  • Crypto currency exchanges are uniquely vulnerable to this kind of thing since they actually store the cryptocurrencies for their customers, but the threats are usually hackers and malware rather than lost passwords

Updates

  • After fan outcry over Assassin’s Creed Odyssey’s forced heterosexual relationship and child in their latest DLC, and despite initially saying there wouldn’t be any changes, Ubisoft has announced they’ll be changing the cutscene and dialogue to “better reflect the nature of the relationship for players selecting a non-romantic storyline”
    • They’ll also be addressing the achievement earned after the child is born called “Growing Up”, which many saw as a comment that being gay or childless was a phase to grow out of

Free games of the fortnight

  • Epic Games
    • Jackbox Party Pack (until Feb 7th)
      • 2014
      • Pack of party games playable using your phone as a controller, ranging from head-to-head trivia to made-for-streaming lie detection with audience participation

Security

  • Collection #1 has been released this week, containing more than 700M email addresses and 1.1B unique username/password pairs
    • This collection compiles more than 2000 different leaks dating all the way back to 2008
    • If you’re curious about your credentials you can go to haveibeenpwned.com and type in your email address to see if it was included
      • They also provide a secure password checker, but I’m too paranoid to use it
    • Either way, the big bullet point here is to make sure you don’t re-use passwords, and use 2FA whenever possible. Stay safe out there
  • Also, it looks like Apple’s released security updates for pretty much everything so you should update if possible

Soulja Boy is at it again, shaking up the video game world by putting his name on illegal emulators

  • We missed reporting on it before, but apparently late last year he “released” game consoles, including a Game Boy clone, that were just rebranded bootleg Chinese Linux boxes with the price cranked up that run a bunch of emulators and unlicensed ROMS
    • My favourite part is how the SouljaGame Handheld (which comes with 3,000 games) is marketed as running Switch games
  • Well in a surprise to absolutely no one he was forced to stop selling them, presumably due to legal action, and souljagame.com now redirects to Nintendo’s 3DS store
  • And now he’s back at it again, showing off his latest project that supposedly has 800 games preinstalled from consoles like PlayStation, Game Boy, and Genesis
    • He’s now saying that they’re all licensed, and that Nintendo originally approached him because they wanted in
  • To top it off, when asked if it’ll play Fortnite he said “Yes, we’re working on it.” “Not this one, on the next one you can”
    • When asked for comment, Epic Games just said “No, you can’t play Fortnite on a rooted or jailbroken device due to anti-cheat measures”

YouTube has officially banned users from sharing videos of dangerous pranks and stunts

  • After a blindfolded teen crashed into another vehicle while attempting the Bird Box challenge, YouTube is finally stepping in
  • They’ve updated their guidelines to disallow videos “that can cause death and/or have caused death in some instances”
  • Specific examples cited were the Tide Pod challenge, which had people eating laundry detergent, and the Fire challenge, which had people dousing themselves in rubbing alcohol and setting themselves on fire
    • Yes, apparently the fire challenge is a thing. The flames are sometimes not visible to the naked eye, and in many cases the resulting burns require skin grafts
    • So that was my daily dose of what the fuck this week
  • They’ve also added that they don’t allow “pranks that make victims believe they’re in serious physical danger”, and “pranks that cause children to experience severe emotional distress”
  • We have yet to see policies against hateful or racist rhetoric, but hey, baby steps

      • The figure reportedly sold for about 3,000 yen (about US$27)
    • Ibaraki prefectural police discovered the figure through a “cyber patrol” in the fall
      • Police confiscated about 1,000 female character figures from the man’s home and are investigating for the possibility of additional crimes
      • Police discovered suspicious deposits into the man’s bank account
        • 8.5 million yen (about US$77,000) in a 2 year span
        • According to authorities, the man sold figures for prices ranging from 1,000 yen (about US$9) to 15,000 yen (about US$137) each
  • As I am out of touch with Anime I wanted to see where these characters are from
    • Info also from Anime News Network

Wisconsin Man attacks house with axe, after he thought his wife damage his action figure collection

  • From Global News
  • Madison police responded to a domestic disturbance call after the suspect called 911 to report himself to police.
  • Police said the man used a log-splitting axe
    • Destroyed a TV, the stand it sits on, a laptop and a bunch of other items inside his house
    • Smashed the family car
      • Chopped off both side mirrors
      • Eventually striking the windshield with such force that the axe became stuck
    • The suspect’s wife was not home at the time
  • The suspect was arrested for domestic-related charges of disorderly conduct and felony damage to property
    • Police estimate the man caused about $5,000 in damages
  • For an unsatisfying ending to this report
    • The fate of the man’s action figures is unknown

Entire city kept quiet to preserve sounds of legendary violins

  • Classic FM dot com
  • The city of Cremona, Italy
    • Is home to some of the world’s finest violins made by Antonio Stradivari
    • All the locals are keeping quiet to save the sound of one precious instrument.
  • Who is Antonio Stradivari
    • A 17th and 18th-century violin maker who created some of the finest string instruments in history
    • Today, his instruments are on display in various museums and are used by only the finest musicians
  • The project is called ‘Stradivarius Sound Bank’
    • To compile a database of recordings of the tones and sounds of four instruments selected from Cremona’s Museo del Violino
    • To perfectly capture the sounds of these iconic instruments, any outside noises have to be kept to a minimum
  • Cremona’s mayor, Gianluca Galimberti, has implored citizens to avoid sudden and unnecessary sounds
    • The cobbled streets around the recording sessions are being closed off for five weeks as the recordings go underway
    • To avoid noise vibrations reverberating in the microphones and ruining the recordings
    • They’ve even cordoned off the surrounding streets
    • The auditorium’s ventilation and elevators were turned off
    • Even the auditorium’s light bulbs were unscrewed
  • Why So much effort?
    • These instruments’ sounds change over time
    • Fausto Cacciatori, curator of the Museo del Violino, told The New York Times
      • Each Stradivarius has “its own personality” but that their distinctive sounds “will inevitably change.”
      • “It’s part of their life cycle”
      • “We preserve and restore them, but after they reach a certain age, they become too fragile to be played and they ‘go to sleep,’ so to speak.”
  • Leonardo Tedeschi, who came up with the idea for this project
    • Said: “This will allow my grandchildren to hear what a Strad sounded like. We are making immortal the finest instrument ever crafted.”
  • Josh’s commentary
    • This is awesome as violin is my favourite instrument
    • And when they are done this has the potential to be the most expensive music plug-in ever

Competitive Farming E Sports

  • From Kotaku
  • Makers of the Farming Simulator games
    • The Swiss game studio Giants Software announced Wednesday it’s decided to make the series into a full blown esport
    • They are committing 250,000€ ($284,803 US), in prize money to the establishment of a Farming Simulator League
      • Yeams of three will compete to see who can be the best at stuff like stacking bales of hay
    • Farming Simulator is not lighthearted like Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley
      • Serious farming equipment used by actual farmers today
      • The accuracy of equipment use has most players most players using steering wheel set ups
  • Giants Software said in a press release
    • The new Farming Simulator League will be built around teams of three
      • And will challenge them with competing across a number of different farming-based tasks.
    • The inaugural season of the league will focus on 10 separate tournaments, each hosted in Europe at events like GamesCom and Paris Games Week
      • With a point system to determine which teams will make it to the Championship tournament at FarmCon 2020
  • An interview with Esports Observer, Giants Software CEO Christian Ammann said
    • The plan is to have teams backed by farm-tech manufacturers rather than the usual gaming companies and esports organizations
    • There’s still not a lot of detail about how the upcoming league will be structured
  • For Farming Simulator fans
    • The 3 v 3 competitive mode will be launching in Farming Simulator 2019

WarGroove comes to Nintendo Switch February 1st

Site – https://wargroove.com/
From Indie publisher Chucklefish Know for

  • Starbound
  • Stardew Valley

Site also says it is coming to Steam, Xbox One and PS4

  • But I saw the Switch ad first

Looks like Advance Wars/Fire Emblem

  • Customizable battlefields
  • Custom campaigns
  • Online multiplayer skirmishes

4 Warring factions

  • Lets take the Quiz now with Alan!
  • I got Cherrystone
    • You’re known by your friends as ‘the dependable one’, a trust-worthy type, loyal to those you care about. You’re a deep thinker, using your knowledge to your strategic advantage. Your only real flaw is your tendency to get distracted by petting dogs in need of belly rubs! Who can really blame you for that?
    • There is something I like about each faction
  • Cherrystone Kingdom
    • Traditional look of European Knights
    • Silver armour and red cloth
  • Heavensong Empire
    • Outfits have a Samurai flair
    • They also wear Golden animal masks that reflect their role and discipline
    • Cloth and leather armour, yellow is their primary colour
  • Felheim Legion
    • Viking look
    • Undead and supernatural beings in their ranks
    • Blue cloth and heavy brown wool for their outfits
  • Floran Tribes
    • Plant people, some very humanoid
      • Looks like Dryads
    • Celtic and/or Druid look
    • Primarily green, they have a natural colour palette

I like the look a lot, going to want to watch some gameplay and maybe pick it up for myself.

Tidbits

  • Move over Korea, Google’s new AlphaStar AI system is crushing pro Starcraft II players
    • Even after it was tweaked with slower-than-human reaction times and fewer actions per minute than professional human players it managed to win 10 of its 11 matches
  • Metroid Prime 4 is being delayed after Nintendo decided to reboot the project and shift development back to the series’ original developer, Retro Studios
    • In a development update video they said that they didn’t make the decision lightly, but the existing development hadn’t reached the standards they were looking for
  • Windows 10 Mobile is becoming de-supported this December
    • In other news, Windows 10 Mobile is apparently still supported in 2019?
    • They’re recommending that users switch to an iPhone or Android device, since they’ll stop releasing any updates on December 10, 2019, which is amusing after their funeral procession for the iPhone when it released
  • Get ready for the bounty of Pokemon movies on its way
    • Detective Pikachu sequel is already in development, and they’re working on adapting Red and Blue as well as a spinoff centered on Mewtwo

Ale & Blood mini review

  • Really entertaining novella in the Bring Down Heaven series by Sam Sykes
  • Great taste of his style if you’re interested but didn’t want to commit to a full novel

Recommend Newsflesh trilogy by Mira Grant (and all the side novellas)

  • Summary from GoodReads
  • The zombie apocalypse happened more than twenty years ago. Contrary to popular belief, we didn’t all die out, largely because we’d had years of horror movies to tell us how to behave when the dead start walking. We fought back, and we won…sort of. The dead still walk; loved ones still try to eat you if you’re not careful; the virus that caused the problem in the first place is still incurable. But at least we lived, right?
  • The Newsflesh Trilogy is a story about blogging, politics, medical science, espionage, betrayal, the ties that bind, the ties that don’t, how George Romero accidentally saved the world, and, of course, zombies. It’s thoughtful horror, and horrific science fiction, and I’m very fond of it.

Were back and there is free games of the month! Josh talks about some new things for the future. Alan recommends something for your health. Josh has his first Bad Description challenge.

Today’s bad description:
“After his girlfriend is abducted by the stubborn antagonist. Tradesmen is forced to pursue through a dangerous construction site.”

A new year means a new list of the top 50 worst passwords of the year!

  • Bad news, #49 is joshua
  • Then we have some classics, like #43- letmein
  • New ones, like #39- harley
  • A new twist on qwerty at #26- zxcvbnm
  • The double-devil at 1#4- 666666
  • Down from #4 last year to #9 this year- qwerty
  • And for the 5th consecutive year:
    • Exactly what it says on the tin at #2- password
    • And continuing its reign as the #1 worst password- 123456

Bethesda just keeps shooting themselves in the foot over Fallout 76 – and I’m not even talking about the game itself!

  • First there was the Power Armor Edition of the game that came with a functional power armor helmet (which was pretty cool) and a bag to carry it that was supposed to be durable canvas, but was instead cheap, flimsy nylon
    • Even after shipping the product listing showed the original canvas bag that was advertised
    • Eventually the listing was updated to say nylon, but the picture still has not been updated
    • The initial response from Bethesda support? “We are sorry that you aren’t happy with the bag. The bag shown in the media was a prototype and was too expensive to make.”
    • They then offered 500 Atoms (about $5 worth of their in-game currency) to people that contacted support with proof of purchase
    • Then a week later they finally announced plans to make things right and manufacture proper canvas replacement bags
      • If you bought the Power Armor Edition you have until January 31st to submit a ticket at beth.games/2QDropM to get the replacement when they’re ready
    • But wait, there’s more!
      • Many users, after submitting tickets for the replacement, were shown all of the other users’ replacement tickets including addresses, emails, and partial credit card info
      • The problem was fixed in about 45 minutes, but they confirmed that 65 tickets containing personal information were exposed in that time
      • Apparently they’re contacting customers that were affected, but that’s not really a genie you can put back in the bottle
  • Then, to cap it all off, Nuka Dark Rum brought us a whole new fiasco
    • The idea here was that it would be a dark rum in the iconic Nuka Cola rocket bottle- pretty cool, right? Maybe even worth the $80 they were charging
    • Well after they started shipping, a note appeared at the tail end of the website talking about “the story of the intentional and complex design of the Nuka Dark Rum product”
      • Because you know any time you have to tell people something was intentional that really inspires confidence
    • It goes on to say how no corners were cut, and “it cost over 2X what it would have if we would have simply cast a glass mold”
      • Concerned yet?
    • They apparently decided that a glass bottle alone wouldn’t be dramatic enough, even though I think a glass rocket bottle would be pretty great all on its own
    • Which brings us to my favourite line- “Over 100 hours were spent just writing the code to create the 3D-printed prototype of the shells”
    • So they 3D printed a giant novelty plastic shell for a standard bottle- 13 inches tall and 6 inches wide
    • The cap is kind of neat, where instead of a screw-top it’s an integrated cork, but I’ve seen some videos of people trying to pour the rum and the plastic shell definitely doesn’t play nice with the glass bottle inside

Tidbits

  • According to the New York Times, Facebook is selling even more of your personal info than we thought!
    • Not only did they give companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Sony access to data on all your friends, but they also gave Netflix and Spotify the ability to read your private messages
  • The FCC in the US has reclassified text messages as an “information service” instead of a telecom service
    • What does this mean? They basically just repealed net neutrality for your text messages
    • Masked as a way to allow telecom companies to block spam messages, it also dismantles protective regulations and gives them the ability to censor or favour speech as they choose, potentially blocking or editing your message if they feel like it
